A man who was paralyzed after a traffic stop has been awarded $20 million in a record police brutality settlement in Northern California. Army Veteran Gregory Gross sued the Yuba City Police Department after officers used excessive force while arresting him on suspicion of drunk driving, causing him severe injuries, Trân Nguyễn reports for The Associated Press. Video footage showed officers using “pain compliance” techniques and disregarding Gross when he said he couldn’t breathe or feel his legs.
As part of the settlement, the police department has also agreed to begin randomly auditing body-cam footage and reviewing use of force incidents for misconduct.
