A disbarred lawyer and a former Democratic congressional candidate has been found guilty of stealing $275,000 from a former client who had suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Former lawyer Justin P. Nadeau was convicted of convincing his former client, who was mentally incapacitated, to give him $275,000 in loans, according to an April 1 press release from the New Hampshire Department of Justice.

To conceal his misconduct, Nadeau produced false electronic file metadata, fabricated documents and forged a signature. The New Hampshire Attorney Discipline Office’s professional conduct committee oversaw an ethics investigation into the case.

“It’s difficult for me to imagine something worse for a lawyer to do,” one committee member said, according to court records and coverage by the NH Journal.

Nadeau was found guilty of theft by deception, financial exploitation of an impaired adult, forgery and falsifying physical evidence. He is scheduled to be sentenced in June.

The New Hampshire Union Leader via Yahoo News also had coverage.
