Discrimination and breach of contract claims against the Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., by an expelled white student was tossed out of federal court last week.

Former student Michael Newman, who sued the law school in January 2023, alleged that he faced racist abuse and was wrongfully expelled in 2022, according to the story.
In his March 25 opinion, U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the District of Columbia said Newman didn’t offer evidence that school administrators manipulated his grades, forcing him to lose his $26,000 scholarship.
“The evidence does not bear this out,” according to the opinion. “Instead, it shows that Newman failed to rank in the top half of his class because he struggled academically.”
But McFadden allowed two claims of defamation by Newman, who is representing himself, to move forward in the claims against Danielle Holley, a former dean of the historically Black institution, according to Reuters.
