The former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas faces felony charges after police say she fled the site of a car crash that injured another driver.

Jennifer Lowery, who spent over 20 years prosecuting crimes in the district, was appointed in 2022 by the Department of Justice. According to coverage on ABC13.com, surveillance video captured a black sedan Thursday night crashing into another car. The driver of the car that was struck was Gabriel Fonseca, who crawled out of his damaged vehicle and was assisted by witnesses at the scene, the station reports.

One witness followed the black car, which had also sustained damage during the crash, to a nearby home and reported the findings to authorities. Police arrived at Lowery’s home; however, she did not make a statement and spoke through her husband, also an attorney, according to ABC13.com. Lowery, who still works at the U.S. attorney’s office, according to the State Bar of Texas, was arrested Monday and charged with failure to stop and render aid. She later posted bond. The U.S. attorney’s office declined comment.
