Joran van der Sloot, the long-accused suspect in the 2005 murder of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, has finally admitted to beating Holloway to death on a beach in Aruba after she rejected his advances, Anumita Kaur reports for the Washington Post. The admission came as part of a deal in which van der Sloot pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud after demanding thousands of dollars from Natalee Holloway’s mother — a key connection to the 2005 killing.
Van der Sloot was indicted and pleaded guilty for demanding Beth Holloway pay $25,000 in exchange for information on where her daughter’s body was, and thousands more after her body was recovered. However, while Van der Sloot claimed Holloway was buried under the foundation of a house, he later admitted that was untrue and that he never saw her remains again after putting her body in the ocean. Van der Sloot’s 20-year prison sentence for extortion and wire fraud will run concurrently with his 28-year sentence in Peruvian prison for murdering a 21-year-old business student who was found dead in a hotel room in Lima that year.
