Twenty dangerous drugs, including fifteen new synthetic opioids, will be banned to protect people in the United Kingdom from overdoses and drug related deaths, according to a press release from the country’s home office. Following advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), the synthetic opioids will become Class A drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The ban comes as part of the government’s continued efforts to tackle the supply of dangerous drugs and clamp down on crime. Five other drugs will also be controlled as part of the recent ban, including cumyl-PeGaClone, a synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist which can cause complications such as seizures and liver failure. Three stimulants which create similar effects to ketamine – diphenidine, ephenidine and methoxyphenidine – will also be controlled as Class B drugs.
