Key Allegations: DOJ Sues to Block UnitedHealth/Amedisys Merger, Seeks Civil Penalty for HSR Violation

On November 12, 2024, the Department of Justice (DOJ), along with attorneys general from Maryland, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York, filed suit in the US District Court for the District of Maryland to enjoin the merger of UnitedHealth Group Incorporated and Amedisys, Inc. According to the complaint, the merger would harm competition by reducing quality and range of services, raising prices and worsening terms, and harming labor markets for nurses in home care and hospice care in certain local markets.
