Frank James, the Brooklyn subway shooter who injured ten people on April 12, 2022 and pleaded guilty to 10 counts of terrorism, could serve 10 concurrent life sentences, Karen Zraick and Ana Ley report for the New York Times. James’s defense sought 18 years, arguing that he has been severely mentally ill for his entire adult life, suffers from many ailments, and would almost certainly die behind bars. The acceptance of responsibility is a major factor under federal sentencing guidelines, and will likely figure into the judge’s decision. The prosecution also asked for an additional 120 months for a gun charge that James also pleaded guilty to. All the victims of the shooting survived, albeit with long-lasting injuries and psychological damage.
