AG Bondi gives ousted interim federal prosecutor new title, same duties

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi gave an ousted interim U.S. attorney in Milwaukee a new title, allowing him to continue to head the office.
Former Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel was selected by Bondi for a 120-day term to be the interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin in November. His term expired earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Schimel, also a former judge, was named the district’s first assistant U.S. attorney, according to coverage by the Associated Press via NewsTimes.com.
The Department of Justice’s move circumvents the U.S. Senate confirmation process or approval from federal judges and allows Schimel to continue his duties, according to the story.
Federal judges in the Eastern District of Wisconsin elected not to extend Schimel’s appointment.
“In doing so, the court intends no criticism or commentary on the performance or qualifications of the interim United States attorney or any of the attorneys in the United States attorney’s office,” a notice from the judges stated.
