Family members of prisoners on Singapore’s death row, as well as those already executed, are calling on the city-state’s government to bring an immediate moratorium on executions and implement a review of the death penalty there, reports Adam Hancock for Aljazeera. A petition with more than 1,700 signatures was delivered to the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of World Day Against the Death Penalty. Executions resumed in Singapore in 2022, following a lull during the pandemic, and since then at least 16 people have been hanged for primarily drug offenses. Activists believe there are currently about 50 prisoners on death row in Singapore, with all but three of them jailed for drug-related offenses. Singapore was one of only four countries last year where drug-related executions were confirmed.
