The Florida Bar will appeal a judge’s disciplinary report in the case of an attorney who filed a lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Last month, the judge overseeing the discipline case recommended that Florida lawyer Daniel Uhlfelder be admonished by the Florida Supreme Court, the most lenient form of discipline that he could receive, according to a story by the Tampa Bay Times.

An attorney for the bar on Friday filed a letter indicating that they planned to ask the Florida Supreme Court to review the judge’s findings, although the letter did not specify whether they might seek a more severe form of discipline, according to the story.

The case against Uhlfelder stems from a suit that he filed in 2020 with two other lawyers over concerns that DeSantis did not close public beaches in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Uhlfelder later attempted to draw public attention to his concerns by dressing as the Grim Reaper and walking on the beaches. In 2022, he ran unsuccessfully as a Democratic candidate to be the Florida attorney general, according to the story.

A spokesperson for the Florida Bar declined to comment Monday because of the ongoing litigation, while Uhlfelder’s attorney said he was disappointed in the news, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
