Judiciary seeks more security funding amid increase in threats

With court security a serious concern for judges, the federal judiciary is requesting increased funding, according to its recently released budget request for fiscal year 2027.
The judiciary is asking for $920.9 million for security, a 3.2% increase from fiscal year 2026. Overall, it requested last week $9.7 billion in discretionary funding, a 4.5% increase from the fiscal year 2026 enacted level.
According to the federal judiciary, “security incidents of significant concern” for judges increased by 57% last fiscal year and are “on pace to rise again.” Last fiscal year, federal authorities logged 564 threats against federal judges. Already this year, there have been 241 threats against federal judges.
The proposed security funding would include almost $20 million for the judiciary’s vulnerability management program, intended to help federal judges and their families remove personally identifying information online.
