On June 23, 2025, Media Matters for America (Media Matters) sued the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), challenging the FTC’s investigation that was launched after the media watchdog published reports on extremist content appearing alongside advertisements on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The complaint, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that the FTC’s issuance of a broad Civil Investigative Demand (CID) constitutes a politically motivated campaign of retaliation intended to punish and silence Media Matters for exercising its First Amendment rights.
