Earlier this year, five Rankin County Sheriff’s deputies and one police officer were charged and later pleaded guilty to criminal charges for both federal civil rights offenses and state charges for home invasion, conspiracy and obstruction of justice related to a violent warrantless raid where law enforcement officers beat, tased, threatened to rape and sexually assaulted two Black men in Mississippi. This summer, as the case came into the national spotlight, Sheriff Bryan Bailey told the press he was stunned to learn of the “horrendous crimes” his deputies committed.
But according to an investigation by the New York Times and the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting at Mississippi Today, the sheriff’s office has a history of blatant violence and specifically torture allegations as far back as at least 2004, with multiple cases filed as formal complaints, lawsuits, or directly sent to the Sheriff himself with no response.
