A U.S. jury has convicted a Puerto Rican man of leading a multi-year scheme in which cocaine was transported to the U.S. from Puerto Rico inside custom-built furniture, Vanessa Arredondo reports for USA Today. Omar Lopez Castro previously served a 10-year sentence for trafficking cocaine from Puerto Rico to New York and, once released, immediately returned to the trade, according to the Department of Justice.
Castro connected with a drug trafficking organization and hired its members to ship his cocaine, with a street value of over $8 million, to the U.S. inside custom-built furniture between September 2018 and October 2022. In total, about 9,900 pounds of cocaine, worth at least $135,000,000 were shipped in the scheme. Castro was convicted of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute narcotics and faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison.
