Taylor Wessing and H.M. Chan & Co have mutually agreed to separate, with H.M. Chan & Co relaunching as an independent firm in Hong Kong. The two firms will continue to collaborate on client matters and support each other’s future strategies in Asia. The decoupling will be effective from 17 November 2025.
The development follows Taylor Wessing’s announcement of an ambitious growth strategy aimed at achieving pre-eminence in its core sectors across major European markets, with a measured presence in other regions, shaped by its clients’ cross-border needs. As part of this strategy, the firm has recently announced a realignment of its China presence, which concentrates the firm’s capabilities in an expanded Shanghai office and plans to open a new office in Shenzhen in due course.
H.M. Chan & Co is a Hong Kong corporate law firm established by professionals with extensive experience in cross-border and Asia-wide transactions. The firm was established by Mark Chan as its founder and managing partner in 2015. Initially, it operated in association with Taylor Wessing from 2016 to 2021, before formally becoming a part of Taylor Wessing in 2021. During this time, it was recognised on numerous occasions as the ‘Transactional Boutique Law Firm of the Year’ in Hong Kong by Asian Legal Business.
Co-chair of Taylor Wessing, Shane Gleghorn, said, “I am pleased that we have mutually and amicably agreed to this decoupling, with a commitment on both sides to remaining close and collaborating to deliver outcomes for clients.”
Mark Chan said, “Our relationship with Taylor Wessing stretches back over ten years, and we are delighted that this will continue. We are excited to relaunch H.M. Chan & Co and look forward to strengthening our presence in Hong Kong and across Asia.”
